With its double ring of walls and dozens of towers, the Cité of Carcassonne is one of the great medieval fortresses of Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. People come for the count’s castle and the wall walk, but also to stroll through its cobbled lanes, between little squares and stone façades.
Our tip for your stay: visit early in the morning or late in the day, when the light turns the ramparts golden and the lanes are quiet again.
